I AM BECAUSE WE ARE

Kristen Ashburn
Kristen Ashburn, freelance photographer, spoke tonight at the FedEx Global Education Center on campus here at Chapel Hill. I left feeling empowered, inspired, and called to action. She showed us a piece she's been working on in collaboration with MediaStorm, called Bloodline, which you can watch at http://www.kristenashburn.com.

Here's a little bit of background information about Kristen:
"Kristen Ashburn is a documentary photographer based in New York City who has received numerous honors including the National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism (2006, 2003), and two World Press Photo prizes (2005, 2003). She received the Getty Foundation Grant 2006, Canon’s Female Photojournalist Award in 2004, and the Marty Forscher Fellowship for Humanistic Photography 2003. In 2004 she was recognized as one of Photo District News ‘30 under 30 photographers’.

About Bloodline
"Bloodline: AIDS and Family provides an intimate look at the harsh reality of the AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa, which has already claimed over thirty million lives. Looking beyond the statistics and into the individual stories of the unfolding catastrophe, award-winning photojournalist Kristen Ashburn documented the impact of the disease from 2001 onward, spending months with families to chronicle their struggle with HIV/AIDS. The African social landscape, forever altered by the AIDS pandemic, is memorialized in her powerful collection of imagery (MediaStorm)."
