Today was such a wonderful day for so many reasons...
This morning, I woke up to an email I received from Carissa, a girl I met right before I left Ghana who was formerly in the Peace Corps in Niger. She helped me conduct a final interview with the Niger street children and beggars and translated in Hausa for an audio recording.
In the email, Carissa told me that ever since the interview, she and her friend have seen Hada (the main Nigerien man who we interviewed) and his family numerous times, and that she and the rest of the Nigeriens get so excited to see each other. Before leaving, Hada told me that his eyes were severely irritating him, but he couldn't afford to go in for an eye checkup. He is the eldest of the Niger migrants in Ghana and seems to be the most educated and has helped me the most in gathering information. Our time was running out and unfortunately, we were unable to coordinate an eye checkup.
Carissa told me in today's email that she looked into it and the checkup only costs 7 cedis (which is a little less than $7). Thus, she and her friend are planning on taking Hada in to have his eyes checked on MONDAY!
What a blessing...that this story--taking a deeper or closer look into the lives of the people society so often deems as "untouchables"--might live on long after I've left Ghana.
