Happy Halloweeeeeeeeen

10/31/08
So...Africa definitely doesn't celebrate Halloween...so we had to improvise---activities, costumes, and all.

McKenzie and I found ridiculously ugly glasses in town one day and figured they would make for an easy costume, so we were GEEKS! Other people dressed up as such things as...a peacock, mosquito nets, Quailman (Doug), people in togas, a grasshopper, a tro-tro, a girl covered in water satchel bags, fertility dolls (Becca and Callie), etc...it was quite creative and impressive considering that we are in Africa!

Throughout the day, Kenz and I went around campus shouting "HAPPY Halloweeeeeeen"---and of course, we got some pretty mixed and cooky responses! One lady gave each of us a free lollipop and a pack of PK gum (don't get too excited, it's not even close to anything like Orbit).

The games began with a "Watermelon Carving Contest" (which by the way, was much more delicious to scoop out than a pumpkin, and no, there are not any pumpkins in Africa). McKenzie and I carved the outline of Africa, Becca carved "I Love Ghana", and Mary Beth carved the outline of Obama's face (I still don't know how she managed to do that design!).

After carving watermelons and eating candy corn (sent by Momma Brantmeyer---thanks, Mom!), we bobbed for apples. I forgot how much fun it is to go bobbing for apples! It's a lot more difficult than I remembered, too, but the prize was of course delicious. To top the night off, we dipped our apples, along with marshmallows, bananas, and chocolate chip cookies, supplied by Becca, into CHOCOLATE FONDUE...mmm...it was a very HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
