Last weekend on our way to the Volta region, we stopped at a monkey sanctuary to feed bananas to the monkeys. I have been pretty close to monkeys before, in Thailand and in Malaysia, but here they were smaller, closer, and still made for a story or two.
We trekked through the muddy forest, as our tour guide sent monkey calls across the treetops, holding our bananas anxiously in our hands. Before long, we stopped in our tracks hesitantly, as we spotted the monkeys. We extended our arms and the monkeys ran down from tree trunk to tree trunk to peel the bananas from our hands. They were so close that we could see each of their fingernails and every individual hair on their little bodies. Some of us shrieked, some of us trembled, but mostly we laughed...and a monkey peed on Maggie as we left.
