A Naming Ceremony

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Today we woke up super early. Mr. Passah, our tour director picked up our group from the International Hostel at 6:00am (yeah, that's 2:00am EST), to go to an African naming ceremony. In Ghana, the babies are not officially named until they are exactly 8 days old. On the eighth day, family members, friends, and obrunis, or "white people" (in our case), gather for food, drinks, presentation of gifts, and celebration. The name is revealed to everyone who is present and the day proceeds with more dancing, drinks, and food. The baby's first name (at the ceremony we went to today) was "Ivan" (I hope he isn't "terrible").

This brings me back to how friendly the Ghanaians are. At the ceremony, they had a photographer and videographer and in addition to constantly videotaping us (the 6 white people/obrunis), they insisted that we be in their formal family photos. It was a lot of fun and truly a cultural African experience.
