The March Forth with Hope Foundation Gala | 2010

On Friday, February 12th, 2010, more than 300 guests gathered at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte to celebrate the life of Hope Elizabeth Stout. Hope was a 12-year-old who truly lived out her name. After being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a very rare and extremely aggressive type of bone cancer, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Western NC offered to make one of her wises come true. Hope wished for 155 other kids to get their wishes.

Kevin Donnalley, a former Carolina Panthers player, plays in the snow at Bank of America Stadium. It would have been something that his friend Hope Stout would have wanted. He first met Hope at a Panthers football game and was moved by her spirit. Donnalley serves on the Board of Directors and has played an integral role in the March Forth With Hope Foundation. Head coach of the Carolina Panthers, John Fox, and other Carolina Panthers players also attended the gala Friday night.

A pair of autographed cleats worn by Carolina Panther running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart was one of the items auctioned off at the live auction Friday night. Williams and Stewart became the first set of teammates in NFL history to rush for more than 1,100 yards in the same season. The cleats sold for $5,000, with all proceeds benefiting the March Forth With Hope Foundation.

Keith Larson and Molly Grantham, from WBTV, emceed the March Forth With Hope Foundation Benefit gala at Bank of America Stadium. Larson interviewed Hope Stout in December of 2003 before she lost her courageous battle to cancer.

WBTV’s Molly Grantham interviews Nils and Elizabeth Martinsen, beneficiaries of a grant given by the March Forth With Hope Foundation to help ease costs while their young daughter was in the hospital. The Martinsens authentically expressed their sincere gratitude for all that the MFWH foundation has provided for their family.

Shelby and Stuart Stout speak about the March Forth With Hope Foundation, which they founded in honor and memory of their daughter, Hope Elizabeth Stout. The foundation provides financial assistance to families battling cancer or other life-threatening diseases. Their daughter Hope was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2003.

Holly Stout, one of Hope’s older sisters, holds a yellow male Labrador Retriever during the live auction at the 2010 March Forth With Hope Foundation gala. The puppy was the most popular auction item of the night. After several back and forth bidding wars, the lab sold for $3,200.

Stuart, Holly, Shelby and Austin Stout continue to share their family’s story of Hope with the world. Stuart and Shelby co-authored a book titled “Hope’s Wish,” a story about “How one girl’s dream made others come true.” They are also currently working on a film and are aiming for completion by the end of 2010.

On Friday night, the most popular spot to take photos was on an outside balcony. Two guests from the United Spirit table stepped outside of the Carolina Panthers Den room to marvel at the snow-covered Bank of America Stadium.

Jeff and MaryAnn Fowlkes are pictured with Katherine Southard, Miss North Carolina 2009, who is modeling an Estate David Yurman 14Kt Yellow Gold and Sterling Silver Citrine Pendant. The necklace was one of the items in the live auction at the gala.

Shelby Stout, mother of Hope Stout, enjoys the evening on the dance floor with some of Hope’s closest childhood friends. The redheaded girl enjoyed cheerleading, basketball and spending time with her friends and family.

Several volunteers from the Stout family’s community handed out programs and greeted guests as they entered the Carolina Panthers Den for the 2010 gala.

On the night of the March Forth With Hope Foundation gala, snow blanketed the Bank of America Stadium field. In the spirit of Hope Stout, Keith Larson and Molly Grantham from WBTV and former Carolina Panthers player Kevin Donnalley stepped outside to cherish the unexpected weather.

Hope Stout made such a selfless wish in 2003. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation offered to grant Hope a wish, she asked for the 155 other children on the list to receive their wishes. She dreamt of having a black tie gala as a fundraiser to raise money for the other kids. Every year since, a black tie gala has continued to raise money and celebrate Hope’s legacy.

Tamara Lackey is my favorite children's photography photographer. She has a way of working with children that is truly unique, and her enthusiasm and passion is absolutely contagious. Tamara comes from a business background, working for Accenture right out of college. After working in the "business world" for a few years, however, she realized that she had a different calling: opening her own photo business. And boy, does she run a well-oiled machine!

I am so excited for her, as today is the debut of her DVD series entitled "Inside Contemporary Children's Photography." The Principal Cinematographer of ABC's Emmy Award-Winning "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Rex Ballard, worked with Tamara for a year to help produce this need-to-know guide for photographers. I want to personally thank everyone who gave support to my Homecoming campaign. I cannot thank you enough. Because of you, I have the incredible opportunity to help expand PhotoTEACH, a program that I launched internationally in Ghana, West Africa, last year, and one that I continued in Durham last semester at the Salvation Army. I will be using the $1,000 to purchase photo and audio equipment to help teens from low-income families document the lives of "Heroes in Our Midst: Our Village Elders," which is an oral history project launched by the Northeast Central Durham VOICE (durhamvoice.org) to be published later this year in the VOICE. A special thanks to my former professor and independent study mentor, Jock Lauterer, for his support of my vision.

Brantmeyer, Rowe to begin service projects

When Carly Brantmeyer heard her name announced as the 2009 Homecoming queen Saturday, she said it felt like a dream.

“It just felt really surreal,” said the senior photojournalism major from Charlotte. “I’m still trying to process it. It was really exciting.”

Homecoming king Desmond Rowe, who received 39 percent of the 4,288 votes cast, said he felt relieved.

“It was one of those successful moments where everything falls into place,” he said.

Rowe and Brantmeyer, who will serve as king and queen of UNC for the next year, will carry out service projects they designed with the $1,000 they will receive from Carolina Athletic Association. Both hope to use the money to develop long-term community projects.

Brantmeyer, who received 27 percent of 4,504 votes, will expand a project called PhotoTEACH, which provides weekly photography classes to students from low-income and underprivileged families. She started the project while studying abroad in Ghana and brought it to Durham last semester.

With the award, she said she hopes to further expand the program and open it to the UNC community. She said photography empowers students, providing them with confidence and the ability to work in teams.

“Photography classes translate into life lessons,” she said. “It teaches them that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to, and they don’t have to be defined by their circumstances.”

She said she will feature the students’ work in an exhibit so the UNC community can realize the impact of the program.

“I hope to show in a visible and tangible way how their vote made a difference,” Brantmeyer said.

She said the project can continue after she graduates in May.

Rowe said he will use the money to launch Caring and Active Relief through Athletics and Community, a program for the parents and siblings of hospital patients.

He said the program will include activities such as taking families to dinner, laser tag, bowling, ice skating or UNC sporting events.

The project will incorporate student groups to help with basic needs such as transportation. He has been working to get support from local businesses to provide gift certificates and additional funding. The project is also a way for the University to promote itself, he said.

Rowe said he was inspired by the clubs he has been involved with at UNC and is trying to build support within these groups as well. He is a member of Dance Marathon and Carolina Kickoff and is co-chairman of Carolina Fever.

“It just made sense to me,” he said. “It’s something we hadn’t been doing and hadn’t thought of yet.”

Rowe and Brantmeyer both said that as king and queen, they will be a face for the University.

“That’s a great responsibility of any elected student, to represent the University in the best possible manner,” Rowe said.

Brantmeyer hopes to empower youth

Carly Brantmeyer, a photojournalism major from Charlotte, was inspired by her love for photography and children to run for Homecoming queen.

If she wins, Brantmeyer will fund her project PhotoTEACH, a weekly photography class for children from low-income families.

“I think this project is set apart from others because it has already been developed and is sustainable and just needs further funding,” she said.

Brantmeyer, a senior, had never left the country before she attended UNC, her dream school since 5th grade.

And when she had the chance to study abroad to Ghana, Africa, in fall 2008, she brought PhotoTEACH with her.

The project was initially funded with around $500 that Brantmeyer raised through donations from her family and friends. She purchased simple film cameras, which she used to teach eight children from the slums of Nima, Ghana.

After returning from Ghana she expanded her project to teach children in Durham at The Salvation Army.

“I now want to extend it to Carrboro and the Chapel Hill communities,” she said of PhotoTEACH. “It’s not just about me and my project. I want everyone at Carolina to be a part of it.”

She hopes PhotoTEACH will continue even after she graduates.

The cameras used currently are loaned by the School of Mass Communication and Journalism, and she hopes added funding would pay for more equipment.

Brantmeyer said the children she’s taught in Ghana and Durham had never interacted with cameras and that their pictures provided them with a way of telling their story and perspective.

“It was a life-changing experience. They were overjoyed,” she said.

Brantmeyer is a member of the Phi Beta Chi sorority, a senior marshal and the senior class photographer.

She is also the campus representative for Mocha Club, an national organization that funds relief and development projects in Africa.

Brantmeyer has been a member of UNC Dance Marathon — the fundraiser for N.C. Children’s Hospital — for four years, an experience she said she will cherish forever.

“I feel I embody the Carolina tradition of service, leadership and scholarship through the experiences I’ve had here,” she said.

I am so excited to announce that I'm running for your 2009-2010 UNC Homecoming Queen.

I need YOUR help in spreading the word and in campaigning. I would genuinely appreciate any support that you'd be willing to give to the campaign!

Running for Homecoming Queen is so important to me, as I hope to further develop a program that I am passionate about, called PhotoTEACH. PhotoTEACH is a program that I helped develop when studying abroad in Ghana, West Africa, which I then expanded last semester to Durham. At the end of the semester, we showcased students' work in an exhibit at the Salvation Army, which still hangs there today. PhotoTEACH empowers kids and teenagers to express themselves through photography and journalism.

I hope to expand PhotoTEACH to the Carrboro and Chapel Hill communities, and I would LOVE for our campus community (YOU) to be involved. It's not just about me being a part of this service project, but it's about the opportunity to invite EVERYONE at Carolina to feel like they can be a part of the service project and the entire process. If I am able to expand this service project, I want to showcase the students' photographs in a gallery on campus, so that YOU can witness the impact of the service project that you're supporting.

We already have a group of interested and committed students, but we are lacking funding and adequate resources that we need to further develop the program. The opportunity to serve as your 2009-2010 UNC Homecoming Queen would generate funding to pay for cameras and video cameras that will enable the students to tell their stories and the stories of the neighborhoods they come from. It's about empowering the students, with the ultimate lesson being that if they work hard, with their heart at the center of something, that they can achieve anything.

7 p.m.

Wow, no questions from the audience. Lots of applause, but no questions. Everyone is ready for the reception outside, where the questions likely will be asked and friends will catch up with each other.

Impressions:

* High caliber of work from “students.” I just spoke with my photographer friend, Jason Arthurs, and he says the editing often lasted until 4 a.m. while they were on the islands. He was one of three coaches assigned to the teams in the Galapagos. Another coach for the Web site worked from Chapel Hill.
* The quality of the editing was remarkable, but so was the level of technology deployed for the project. The videos were broadcast quality. The slideshows were top shelf.
* There isn’t a lot of text on the Web site. It is a multimedia project, but I found myself reading a lot of background material to better understand the overall context of the graphical presentations.
* Personally, this was a harsh reminder that my reporting skills are showing a lack of practice. My fingers are too slow on the keyboard, and I should have been better prepared with background material, such as the names of the speakers, before getting here.

Some of the interviews make use of 360 panoramic cameras, much like the Google streetview images. It adds a sense of place to the people who are being interviewed.

Some cool underwater video is also available.

6:40 p.m.

Pat Davison, who teaches multimedia, just explained the intentions for the project.

UNC has a multimedia team that produces local projects, but they also have taken on two international projects over the last few summers.

Davison learned about UNC’s ties to the Galapagos after he was referred to Steve Walsh, the geography professor doing work in the Galapagos.

“I began to realize just how little I knew about the Galapagos Islands. I, like many people, think it was still a pristine wilderness,” Davison says.

Walsh explained the challenges facing the islands, and Davison says that led to the idea to tell the story about the human impact on the islands. Much has been written about the islands animals, plants and ecological diversity, but he says he found little about the people who live there and how tourism and immigration is changing the islands.

Another peg was that the project coincided with the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth.

Davison visited the islands last year and met with a colleague from USFQ who helped him create a preliminary story list, which led to last summer’s trip.

The students were divided into three groups to cover the three main population centers on the islands. The students would go out each day to take photos, shoot video and gather data and information about the people they met. They would get together at the end of the day to begin producing.

“Every day at 5:30, we’d go watch the sunset and the sea lions and then we’d go back in and work ourselves to the bone,” Davison says.

The design team decided to use a map interface to divide the content into four sections: Video documentaries, people, places, and then a section for infographics and data-driven reporting to give context.

The site is also available in Spanish, and it will automatically detect the connection speed of users who view it. A low-band-width version was developed so that people in the Galapagos could see the project.

The islands are along the equator in the Pacific Ocean off Ecuador. Pat Davison said that it took two days of travel to reach the islands.

5:45 p.m.

Steve Walsh, professor of geography, is the opening speaker and is going an overview of how the project came about. Tonight’s presentation is focusing on the multimedia project, but it’s clear that the relationship between UNC and Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) is more extensive.

Walsh said that the relationship began after he was invited to the Galapagos to study invasive species, and he met some colleagues at the USFQ. He said that initial trip led to a broader effort between the two universities “to articulate the challenges to the historic flora and flauna that make the Galapagos such a unique setting.”

Participants from the USFQ have been in Chapel Hill since Friday. They even went to Saturday’s UNC football game. I wonder what they think of American football?

It’s cold and dreary outside, but it’s sunny with optimism inside the Mandela Auditorium at UNC-Chapel Hill.

I hate weather leads, by the way, but I just wrote one. Ha!

I’m in the auditorium waiting for the presentation on Living Galapagos, a Web-based project by 30 21 journalism students at the University of North Carolina. They spent 26 days on the Galapagos Island gathering information and stories this summer or what they believe is the first multimedia effort focusing on the islands.

I spoke briefly with Pat Davison, the instructor who coordinated the project, as he rehearsed his speech. He has something to proud of. The Web site is engaging and informative. It tells the story of the people who live on the island and how modern development threatens the islands’ ecosystem.

Davison says that 50,000 people live on the islands, with a mix of natives and immigrants. He says that the island even have a problem with illegal immigration.

I had heard of the project through a photographer I used to work with at the Winston-Salem Journal. He was part of the team who went to the island. I’d say he made better use of his summer than me.

For one of my upcoming photo assignments, I have to find a small, focused, interesting story within the 2009 NC State Fair. As I was researching possibly story topics, I came across their fun interface. Here's a screen shot of the user-friendly, social-media-crazed site. Pretty impressive for a state fair.
